Maria Sharapova Suspended From Role As UN Ambassador After Admitting To Drug Use

After admitting she tested positive for a banned substance at the Australian Open, Maria Sharapova has been suspended from her role as a UN ambassador.

For the past nine years Sharapova has worked with the United Nations Development Programme. The organization has decided to end their relationship with Sharapova, pending the outcome of her case.

While Sharapova has done a tremendous about of work for the UN. It was under the terms of article 28 for the designation of goodwill ambassadors guidelines, that her position was discontinued.

“The UNDP remains grateful to Maria Sharapova for her support of our work, especially around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster recovery. However, in light of Ms Sharapova’s recent announcement, we last week suspended her role as a goodwill ambassador and any planned activities while the investigation continues,” said a spokesperson to The Guardian.

Sharapova has taken responsibility for using the drug and stated she used it for medical reasons. Unfortunately, she is now facing major consequences for it.
