On Thursday, Donald Trump sat with lawmakers in the Oval Office to discuss protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, the Washington Post reports.
According to sources briefed on the meeting, on behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus, Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham presented a plan to include underrepresented countries in Africa and Temporary Protective Status nations, including Haiti, in the visa lottery. In turn, Trump questioned the idea and offered suggestions of his own.
“Why do we want all these people from ‘shithole countries’ coming here?” He reportedly said, adding that the country should welcome more people from countries like Norway, CNN reports.
“Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out,” Trump reportedly said.
Shortly after, when news broke of his comments, sources tell CNN that Trump said the media was blowing his statement out of proportion.
