John Legend Makes Hollywood History, Becomes First Black Man To Reach EGOT Status

Singer, songwriter and actor, John Legend, has officially made Hollywood history with his most recent feat.

On Sunday, at the Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles, Legend took home the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category for his production credit on “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” 

The win landed the “All of Me” singer among a very prestigious group of people, who, too, have earned an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. But, amid joining the exclusive club, which now includes only 14 others, Legend also became the first black man, as well as the youngest to reach the legendary EGOT milestone. 

”Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony in competitive categories,” Legend said, following his historic win. “Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.’ So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amped to be in such rarefied air #EGOT.”

Now, Legend’s Emmy award will join his 10 Grammys, his Oscar for Best Original Song for “Glory” in “Selma,” as well as his Tony for Best Revival of a Play, for his production credit in “Jitney.”
