Dallas Officer Fired After Fatal Shooting of Botham Jean in His Own Home

On Monday morning, the Dallas police officer charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a man in his own apartment was fired.

According to an email from Police Chief Rene Hall, 30-year-old Amber Guyger was let go for her “adverse conduct,” after five years on the force.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“Officer Guyger was terminated for her actions,” Hall said, of the incident that left 26-year-old Botham Jean dead, inside his own home on September 6.

Upon Guyger’s dismissal, Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Jean Family, said Hall had briefed the family on her plan to fire the officer, as well as the reason behind the near-three week delay.

“Specifically she explained that a premature administrative suspension could have possibly implicated Guyger’s fifth amendment protections and compromised the criminal prosecutions,” Merritt said, as he described it as an “initial victory.”

“The Jean family expressed satisfaction in this explanation and in Guyger’s termination,” he said. “However, we are committed to seeing through the next steps of the process of a proper murder indictment, conviction and appropriate sentencing.”
