Meek Mill To Be Honored With Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Impact Award

Meek Mill will receive a Power Players Impact Award at the first R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players Awards.

The award will be given to Meek in honor of his efforts towards battling the abuse of the American criminal justice system, as well as his social justice movements and impact within the music industry. It’s been nearly seven months since Meek was released on bail from Pennsylvania state prison after being sentenced to two to four years behind bars.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In this time, Meek has still been trying to get rid of a violation charge, which is how he originally received the sentence. His probation charge stems from him being arrested twice last year for reckless driving and for fighting at an airport.

However, both of those charges were dropped, according to XXL magazine. Meek was released by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in the midst of a legal battle with Meek’s lawyer arguing that his judge was biased and the original arresting officer was corrupt. The officer was the main witness in Meek’s 2008 trial for drug and firearm charges and was banned because of his history of “lying, racial bias, or brutality.”

Since being released, the rapper has collaborated with Roc Nation to alleviate racial bias and police brutality from the criminal justice system. He has become a spokesperson for criminal justice reform, created a reform awareness foundation with Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin and partnered with Jay-Z to create a docu-series about the criminal justice system.
