Bill Cosby can’t seem to stay out of hot water.
Cosby is accusing his former lawyers of fraud and refusing to cough up the $282k lawyers say he owes for work on his criminal case. The comedian claims he doesn’t owe a dime and wants the entire case thrown out.
According to The Blast, Cosby accuses the law firm Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis of charging him inflated invoices.
Cosby insists neither he nor his attorney Thomas Mesereau, “or any other authorized representative directed or requested that Plaintiff perform legal work totaling $183,000.00 over the short period of two months. Indeed, and by Plaintiff’s own admission, Plaintiff served as Cosby’s counsel of record and Attorney Mesereau served as lead criminal defense counsel. Consequently, the overwhelming majority of the legal work was performed by Mr. Mesereau and his team.”
In short, Cosby alleges the lawyers are trying to get a check for more work than they actually did.
“Any alleged legal work performed was unnecessary, duplicative of work performed by lead counsel, inflated and therefore unauthorized and inappropriate. Proof to the contrary is specifically demanded,” Cosby adds.
Cosby denies the firm is owed anything at all, instead, he’s asking for the case to be dismissed.
The comedian hired the firm in March 2016 to work on civil and criminal cases related to several sexual assault allegations. Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis claims they were paid for some of their work, but they only got empty promises from Cosby’s team to pay the outstanding bill. They eventually left the case in April 2018.
The firm sued for the full $282k plus interest.
