Steph Curry and Viola Davis Sign On As Executive Producers For Charleston Church Shooting Documentary

Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry and “How To Get Away With Murder” star Viola Davis are teaming up with Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions to tell the story of the 2015 Charleston Church massacre in a new documentary, titled, “Emanuel.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

According to Variety, Curry’s production company, Unanimous Media, will work alongside Davis and Tennon’s company to serve as executive producers of the film, with Dane Smith, David Segel and Tina Segel.

Directed by Brian Ivie, the documentary will detail the events of June 17, 2015, when 21-year-old Dylan Roof opened fire on a bible study group at the historically black church, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine.

The film will feature interviews with the survivors and the affected families, as it was made in direct partnership with the city and the families involved, the publication reports.

While producers described the film as “a poignant story of justice and faith, love and hate, and the healing power of forgiveness,” Curry said the film “highlights how a horrible tragedy can bring a community together, and spreads an important message about the power of forgiveness.”

“Stories like this are the reason we created Unanimous and entered the entertainment space. I hope the film inspires others like it does me,” he continued.

In a joint statement, Davis and Tennon said, “We, along with the country, grieved each family’s loss. Yet, miraculously, from the devestation we witnessed tremendous benchmarks of humanity. The survivors found courage to love in the face of hate. JuVee is proud to be a part of this healing and truth telling along with Unanimous Media, Brian Ivie and John Sheppard,” who will produce the project, alongside Mike Wildt and Dimas Salaberrios.
