Baller Alert caught up with the first lady of We The Best, Steph Lecor to discuss everything from her childhood, career, DJ Khaled to her new role on “Love and Hip Hop Miami.”
To kick off the interview, Lecor opened up about her Haitian upbringing in the Sunshine State, more specifically in Miami, which she described as a “diverse, melting pot,” that helped her relate to the people in her environment.
But, despite her love for Miami, she did leave to Los Angeles to further her career in music. Although she is bi-costal, meaning she has a home in both Miami and Los Angeles, she explained the reason she chose to work on her music on the West Coast.
“I just think that there’s something really electric about recording music in L.A.,” she said. “I kind of – right now – am in this space where I just really enjoy the energy there for music. But Miami’s my home, so I still have my place here and I can’t leave it. And my son is here so I’m definitely back and forth.”
“For me, going [to L.A] is just a new environment, its a new energy, a new place, a new feeling when you’re there. But Miami is always home,” she added.
As Lecor continued, she opened up about the start of her music career, which kicked off at the age of 3, alongside her father. As she got older, like most singers, she sang with the church choir and performed in talent shows, but she didn’t take it serious until she went on tour with Van Halen about 13 years ago, as a backup singer.
Then, 10 years later, Lecor teamed up with Miami’s own, DJ Khaled, as he signed her as the first lady of his label, We The Best.
“The day I got signed was the day I met him, so I had no expectations,” she said. “He heard the record ‘Saturday’ that I did and he really loved it, and he and my manager are really good friends.”
“Khaled is one of the most positive people that I know, he keeps it really real,” she continued of her mentor. “He’s definitely been someone that I’ve looked up to in many ways. Not just as a father, but also as a really hard working individual.”
Not only is Lecor the first lady of We The Best, she’s also a cast member of “Love and Hip Hop: Miami.” Although at first her team was against the move, she said she went behind their backs and did it anyway, and by the time she secured the role, she said her team was supportive because of the success of Cardi B post “Love and Hip Hop.”
But, if you’re looking for the real tea about “Love and Hip Hop: Miami,” you’ll have to tune in in January!
