A college student says she pretended to be a Black supporter of President Donald Trump on Twitter, drew donations to a crowdfunding page, and then revealed the whole thing was a joke and gave the money back.
According to reports at the time, a young woman named Quran posted a tweet on October 27th saying she was a Trump supporter who was tired of hiding her views. The tweet used hashtags like #BlacksForTrump and #WalkAway and came with a photo of her in a red “Make America Great Again” hat.
The post went viral. She then tweeted that her family had been furious and that she was being kicked out of the house, and she shared screenshots of a conversation with a parent. On November 1st she set up a GoFundMe page asking supporters to help pay her tuition. She later tweeted that donors had given enough for school costs and gadgets.
Within hours, she told followers none of it was real. She said she does not support the president and that she wanted to show how quickly people rally around any Black person who says they back him.
Some outlets reported that she had raised around $150,000, but she disputed that. Speaking to New York Magazine, she said the real total was closer to $200 and that she refunded every donor because she felt uneasy about keeping the money.
Quran said she did not want a political party’s supporters paying for her school, and described the stunt as a prank. Baller Alert could not independently confirm the amounts or the details of her family situation, which come from her own posts and interviews.
