Missy Elliott has become the first female rapper nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Missy is, rightfully so, a music legend whose talents extend to producing, performing and having some of the most iconic music videos of all-time. But when it comes to her penmanship, she puts her thang down, flips it and reverses it. No female emcee can quite match her unique flare, which is why she has become the first female rapper to grace the Songwriters Hall of Fame nominations.
The list of nominees was posted Wednesday (Nov. 7); Elliott’s nomination could make her the third rapper to be added to the organization alongside #JermaineDupri and #JayZ. Other artists on the list include #MariahCarey, #Chrissi Hynde, #VinceGill, #MikeLove, #Jimmy Cliff, #JeffLynne, #CatStevens, #JohnPrine, #LloydPrice, #TommyJames and the Eurythmics (#AnnieLennox and #DaveStewart).
Non-performing nominees are #JackTempchin, #DeanDillon, #JerryFuller, #TomTHall, #RogerNichols and #DallasAustin, who wrote hits for #TLC, #Madonna, #Monica, #Pink and #BoyzIIMen.
The artists will be officially inducted at the Hall’s 50th annual Induction & Awards Gala in New York on June 13, 2019. Songwriters are only eligible for induction after writing music for at least 20 years. Elliott is known for several musical hits including, “Work It,” “Lose Control,” Get Ur Freak On” and more.
