Back in December, after months of legal back and forth between Mel B and her ex-husband, Stephen Belafonte, the two finalized their divorce, which prompted a dramatic – yet, symbolic – course of action for Mel B.
Prior to their split, Mel tattooed Belafonte’s name into her ribs, with the words, “til death do us part you own my heart” to symbolize their love. But, when things ended between the two, Mel went through extreme measures to have it removed.
Instead of laser removal or a simple cover up, Mel had Stephen’s name cut out, which created an incision that required 13 stitches. As for the skin, Mel had plans to burn it, but now, according to Metro UK, the Spice Girl has revealed that she kept it.
“A lot of my surgery was to do with getting out of my abusive relationship,” she said of the initial removal. “It was almost like a cleanse. I just wanted to feel fresh and new again and untouched by that person.”
“It sounds horrific,” she continued, “but what I went through was so horrific. This one particular tattoo that my ex had forced me to have was ‘Stephen until death do us part, you own my heart.’ I just thought I can’t go through the pain of getting it lasered….so I convinced a good friend of mine, a doctor, I said ‘Can you just cut it off my body?”
“I’ve saved it in a jar, which sounds a bit strange,” she said, as she revealed the location. “At the top of my wardrobe. Nobody can see it, but I know it’s there.”
