Jordan Peele And Nia DaCosta Are Bringing “Candyman” Back In 2020 As A Contemporary And “Spiritual Sequel”

A Jordan Peele-produced and Nia DaCosta directed sequel to the 1992 horror “Candyman” is coming in 2020, allowing the newer generation to get into this old black urban legend. Nia, who directed indie modern Western “Little Woods,” is teaming up with Jordan and his Monkeypaw Productions partner Win Rosenfeld to reimagine the movie as a contemporary and “spiritual sequel” to the classic horror film.

The original “Candyman” was inspired by the Clive Barker story “The Forbidden.” The story told the legend of the Candyman, who was the murdered son of a slave that turned into a supernatural killer and formed a unique relationship with a white grad student working on a report about urban legends. Like the original, the sequel will be set in Chicago but not in the housing projects but in a more gentrified part of the city.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In a statement, #JordanPeele said, “The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside ‘Night of the Living Dead,’ ‘Candyman’ was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”

Jon Glickman of MGM stated, “We cannot wait for the world to see what the mind-blowing combination of Jordan, Win, and Nia bring to the legend of ‘Candyman.’ They have created a story that will not only pay reverence to Clive Barker’s haunting and brilliant source material but is also thoroughly modern and will bring in a whole new generation of fans.”

Production will begin in Spring of 2019 and MGM teamed up with Universal to release the project on June 12, 2020.

Who is hitting the theaters to relive their childhood nightmares for this sequel?
