An appeals court has upheld the jury verdict in favor of NBA player Derrick Rose in the civil lawsuit brought against him by a woman who accused him of rape, according to The Blast. Rose has denied the allegations throughout the case.
The lawsuit was filed by a former girlfriend, identified in court filings as Jane Doe, who alleged that Rose and two friends assaulted her at her apartment in 2013. She sought more than $21 million in damages. In 2016, a jury sided with Rose and his friends after a civil trial, and jurors told reporters afterward that the case against them did not add up.
The plaintiff appealed, arguing the trial judge made mistakes by allowing certain photos, texts and testimony to be presented to the jury. According to The Blast, the appeals court rejected that argument and affirmed the judgment.
The court did decline Rose’s request to sanction the plaintiff’s attorneys for the appeal. The Blast quotes the ruling as saying it does not find that her attorneys brought a frivolous appeal.
This was a civil case, not a criminal one, and the ruling ends the plaintiff’s appeal of the verdict.
