Jewelry and clothes are fine gifts, but you can’t put a price on what Jay-Z did for his grandmother.
Hattie White was one of the most prominent female figures in Jay’s life. The Brooklyn icon’s relationship with his grandmother has been unwavering throughout his life and career. That being said, Hov found dedicating a comfy park bench to Miss Hattie as more than deserving.
The entire Carter family traveled back to New York for the holidays. On Christmas morning, everyone, including the rapper’s mother, wife, and three children, gathered together to unveil the touching surprise. Hov symbolically placed the bench under a tree in his home city’s Prospect Park. It was engraved, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. With love and admiration to our root, Hattie White.”
White’s influence did not stop at her grandson. Beyonce has also formed her own respect and appreciation for the family matriarch. The, now, 93-year-old great grandmother was the powerful force behind the voice of Beyonce’s closing “FREEDOM” quote in Lemonade.
“I had my ups and downs, but I always find the inner strength to pull myself up. I was served lemons, but I made lemonade.”
What a beautiful way to celebrate a glorious life!
