Steph Curry’s Jersey Still Won’t Be Retired at Davidson Until He Graduates

After three NBA championships, two NBA MVPs, five All-Star appearances and a decade in the pros, Steph Curry has revolutionized the game of basketball with his legendary three-pointer, which has also earned him the title of the greatest shooter in NBA history.

Between setting a three-point record in the 2012-13 season, to surpassing that same record in 2015 and again in 2016 with 402 three-pointers, Curry holds the spot for third all-time in made three-pointers in NBA history.

However, despite his many accomplishments, which also includes being the best player out of his Alma Mater, Davidson, he won’t be receiving any special recognition from the school until he completes his degree requirements.

Back in 2015, as Curry emerged as the face of The Golden State Warriors, Davidson revealed its jersey retirement requirements, which carried no exceptions. All honorees must be college graduates, and since Curry left a year early to enter the draft, he missed out on his degree.

But, at the time, Curry understood the circumstances. “I knew what I signed up for when I went to Davidson,” Curry said. “I made a promise to coach [Bob] McKillop and my family that when I left school back in ’09 that that would be accomplished —and it will be soon. Hopefully sooner than later.”

Now, four years later, Curry still has yet to complete the requirements, and the school is not letting up on its policy.

“I think he’s in the process of completing his degree,” McKillop said when asked about Curry’s jersey retirement. “I think there should be a statue of him at San Francisco Bay as well as Davidson.”
