It’s usually a proud moment when someone announces they’re quitting a drug habit. However, for Future, it wasn’t as freeing.
Genius’ Rob Markman caught up with the rapper and talked his recent health change. The recreational codeine using artist, who once sang, “I drink lean, lean, lean. It ain’t embarrassing,” has decided to no longer be an advocate for abusing the substance. Unfortunately for Future, sharing pride in his decision with fans wasn’t something he felt he could relish in.
“I don’t want to tell nobody I stopped drinking lean. I didn’t want to tell them because I felt like then they was going to be like ‘oh, his music changed because he ain’t drinking lean no more.’ Or, ‘I can hear it when he changing.’ And people be like ‘Damn, why don’t you even say it?’ But it’s hard when your fans are used to you being a certain type of way.”
Hendrix is in the ranks with Gucci Mane, Mozzy, Famous Dex, and more who are over the addictive purple drink. He went on to explain that nothing about his music process has changed, which is good news for everyone who’s excited for “The WIZRD” album to drop.
Getting off lean and the death of best friend and engineer, Seth Firkins, lit a welcoming fire under his butt.
“It has made me want to go harder… just looking over and not seeing him to the right of me, I was always to the left, and he was on the right, still the only thing that gets to me to this day. But, besides that, I just keep recording.”
