It’s hard being a stay-at-home parent. It’s so hard that some think stay-at-home parents should be compensated for their work. But how big should the salary be? A new study says $162,581.00.

A new study by Salary.com gathered “a handful of jobs that reflect a day in the life of a mom” and estimated that the medium annual salaries of a stay-at mother/parent is $162,581.00. Researchers found that mothers who stay at home take on several “hybrid” roles like education, executive housekeeper, facilities director, interior designer tax accountant, and staff nurse.

The survey also highlights how the income for a stay-at-home parent has risen over the last few years. In 2016, Salary.com found that moms’ medium annual salaries would be $143,102, and $157,705 in 2017, ABC Chicago reports. Salary also determined that stay-at-home moms worked more than 90 hours a week. Back in 2017, a local news station, WUSA9 asked Facebook users if they agreed with the study’s numbers. Some were open to SAH parents being paid while others were not.

“I am not a [stay-at-home mom], but I know some that are worth every penny and more,” one user wrote. “This is about what it would cost if someone else had to do these jobs,” another mom said. Another comment said being a parent shouldn’t be considered a job, but instead a privilege.

“Taking care of your kids isn’t a ‘job,’ it should be considered a privilege or a gift and no price tag or salary can be put on that,” another user wrote. “This is absurd to even try to compare.”
