An Arizona woman was arrested after police found a newborn baby dead in a restroom trash bag at an Amazon distribution center in Phoenix, according to police and court documents.
Samantha, 22, told police she did not know she was pregnant and panicked after giving birth to a baby girl on Jan. 17 at the facility where she works. She said she had gained about 15 pounds but never felt the baby move, and had not seen a doctor in a year. According to the documents, she gave birth during her lunch break around 11:30 a.m. and told police the baby was not breathing or moving, which made her believe the baby was stillborn.
Police said Samantha stayed in the stall for an extended period, and a coworker eventually gave her paper towels and a bag to clean up. She told police she put the baby in the trash to hide the birth from the baby’s father. A friend then took her home. Hours later, a janitor noticed a trash bag that felt heavier than usual and found the baby inside, described as unresponsive and cold to the touch.
Samantha was booked Jan. 22 on suspicion of unlawful disposal of human remains. At her initial court appearance on Tuesday, prosecutors said they believe the baby was stillborn, but that a medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.
