The Black Panther Lives!

In the eleven months since its release, Marvel’s “Black Panther” had the biggest global debut for a predominately Black cast, the biggest domestic opening for a black director, became the highest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the biggest superhero movie of all time. The film also received widespread recognition, awards, and nominations, including seven nominations at the 91st Academy Awards, three at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, and 12 at the 24th Critics’ Choice Awards, three of which were won.

But, if that wasn’t enough, the legendary film took home two SAG Awards at the 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, including the night’s biggest award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

“To be young, gifted and black,” ‘Black Panther’ star Chadwick Boseman said, as he accepted the award alongside his supporting cast and crew. “We know what it’s like to be told there isn’t a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on.…We know what’s like to be beneath and not above. And that is what we went to work with every day.

“We knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world, that we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing, that we could create a world that exemplified the world that we wanted to see. We knew that we had something that we wanted to give.”

“I know you can’t have a ‘Black Panther’ now without a ‘2’ on it,” he ended.

With the SAG wins, which also included a win for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture, ‘Black Panther’ is now “squarely in contention” for best picture at the Oscars, where it received seven nods, including Best Picture. According to Yahoo, in the last decade, the SAG ensemble winner has also secured the Best Picture Academy Award 50% of the time.
