Chaka Khan Calls Current State Of The Music Industry ‘Very Ugly’

AARP interviewed Chaka Khan, who was candid about her disdain for today’s music industry.

With almost 50 years in the game and ten Grammy wins, Chaka has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. Compared to what she’s bared witness to, these days aren’t getting any better and simply calling it “a circus” just wasn’t enough for the icon.

“It’s very ugly because it’s based on competition. And art is not about competition. It causes a lot of grief and messed-up feelings between musicians and other artists. It’s not where I stand,” she said.

Unlike those who obsess over material success, the “Like Sugar” crooner admitted she doesn’t allow herself to fall into that category.

“I’m not singing to be in the Hall of Fame. I’m not going to let it take up a lot of my time,” she continued.

“If I didn’t, I’d be unbalanced–more unbalanced than I am.  I know it would lead to nothing but ruin.  And so I surrender.  It keeps me stable, somewhat.”

However, no matter how bad things may seem, it doesn’t stop her from recognizing genuine talents, who the legend believes don’t get the respect they deserve. Artists like Jazmine Sullivan and Emily King received honorable nods.

Maybe we’ll get some more “clean” art after Madam Khan drops her first album in 12 years, “Hello Happiness.”
