Following the airing of “Surviving R. Kelly,” attorney Michael Avenatti announced he has new evidence related to the singer. The New Yorker reported speaking with Avenatti before he made the announcement public.
Avenatti said in a statement that he represents multiple clients in connection with allegations of sexual assault of minors. He said he has a 45 minute videotape that he claims shows Kelly with an underage girl, and that the time frame of the alleged assaults on the tape falls within the Illinois statute of limitations. The contents of the tape have not been independently verified. A law enforcement source was also reported to have said an indictment could come soon, though no charges had been announced.
Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, denied the allegations in an interview with the Associated Press. “He never knowingly had sex with an underage woman, he never forced anyone to do anything, he never held anyone captive, he never abused anyone,” Greenberg said.
