“Making a Murderer” star Steven Avery may get a chance at redemption thanks to the mishandling of evidence.

Avery was convicted for the murder of photographer, Teresa Halbach, in 2007. Her charred remains uncovered at his car salvage yard led to his life sentence. That included an equal serving for his nephew, Brendan Dassey. Regardless, Avery continued to proclaim his innocence, and his lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, has been hard at work to prove his claim.

In fact, Zellner took advantage of the opportunity to appeal the court’s decision after finding out about possible human bones found in a gravel pit. The problem is, the bones were a crucial part of evidence but were not tested for DNA. Instead, they were given to the Halbach family.

This means if the bones are tested and found to be Teresa’s, it’s evidence that she was not killed on the convicted murderer’s property.

Zellner excitedly told Newsweek this could potentially “undo the whole case.”

“The case is being remanded back to the circuit court to conduct proceedings, which can include a hearing. The circuit court can grant a new trial, or if not, back to appellate court who can reverse the conviction and/or grant a new trial.”

As developments for Steven have come forward, there’s no word if it will or will not affect Dassey’s conviction.
