Kim Kardashian has committed to paying a former inmate’s rent after he was denied housing.
After serving 20 years of a 35-year sentence on a non-violent drug conviction, Matthew Charles was released from prison under the new First Step act. However, like many newly released inmates, Charles struggled with finding a new home.
But now, thanks to Kardashian, the next five years of Charles’ rent will be covered in his new home. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Kardashian first heard of Charles’ story last May when she saw NPR’s article on his return to prison, AOL.com reports. She then mentioned Charles’ story in her first meeting with Donald Trump, where they discussed Alice Johnson’s clemency. The next conversation was presented last September when the socialite visited the White House for the second time. Upon his release, Charles appeared at Trump’s State of the Union address in February.
However, last Tuesday, Charles applied for residency at an apartment complex in Nashville but was denied because of his felony record and poor credit score. Being incarcerated for 22 years made Charles unable to build credit, which ended with him being rejected for housing. In response to being rejected, Charles posted the letter of denial on his Instagram account with a picture of him posing next to Trump. His story quickly circulated back to Kardashian who then reached out to Charles to offer help.
Charles then took to Facebook to celebrate Kardashian’s actions. “I just received the most wonderful news tonight that I just had to share with everyone. Kim Kardashian-West… heard about my situation. Was moved and has decided to help me,” Charles wrote. “Kim did not do this for attention or publicity, but I had to share it, because it’s too good not to, and my heart is about to burst with happiness, that I wish you to rejoice in this news with me.”
