Forever First Lady Michelle Obama could make history with her memoir “Becoming,” as it’s sold nearly 10 million copies.
According to the Wall Street Journal, #Becoming is reportedly the most successful memoir in history. “We believe this could be the most successful memoir in history,” Thomas Rabe, head of one of Penguin Random House’s parent companies, said Tuesday. Penguin’s chief executive, Markus Dohle, shared that same sentiment, the Journal reports. “I’m not aware, in my personal experience with Penguin Random House, that we ever sold 10 million units of a memoir,” Dohle said.
The Washington Post reported, Obama’s memoir sold two million copies in its first 15 days in stores and was a No. 1 seller in Germany, Greece, the UK and elsewhere. The 55-year-old author and politician has been traveling nationwide on her book tour, discussing the most intimate moments of her life. Some of the elements of her book center around her life, her marriage to President Barack Obama and her daughters’ time while in the White House.
During an interview with People Magazine, Obama opened up the importance of transparency and candidacy. “Because we’re role models, it’s important for us to be honest and say, ‘If you’re in a marriage and there are times you want to leave, that’s normal,’ because I felt that way,” she said.
In 2017, both Michelle and Barack signed book deals to have their memoirs published with Penguin Random House’s Crown Publishing. Dohle, the Penguin Random House CEO, said he hopes President Obama’s memoir will be released later this year, People reported.
