Activist Brittany Packnett and political commentator Symone Sanders say they were attacked in an airport lounge in Nairobi, Kenya, while heading home from a trip.
According to The Root, the incident happened Thursday evening in the Kenya Airways lounge, a partner of Delta through the SkyTeam alliance. Sanders told the outlet that a man who appeared to be heavily intoxicated was speaking loudly and cursing on the phone. She said a lounge attendant and two other people asked him to quiet down, and that she politely asked him to keep it down as well.
Sanders said the man responded by getting louder and making rude gestures. She said that at one point he threw water at Packnett, soaking her, and pushed her down. Sanders said she stepped in to defend her friend and called the moment terrifying.
Packnett shared her account on Twitter, along with a photo of the man. She wrote that he was a UK citizen she identified as Duncan, that other men in the lounge stepped in to subdue him, and that security took nearly 30 minutes to arrive. She criticized the airline and its security response. We are not republishing the photo, and we could not find a statement from the man. His account of what happened is not known, and these are allegations.
By Friday morning, Packnett said the women had not heard back from Kenya Airways or Delta. She said she had landed on her layover, was sore and frustrated but safe, and was waiting on follow up from both airlines. She also said the trip itself had been spectacular.
