A 19 year old man was shot and killed after knocking on the wrong apartment door in Southwest Atlanta, according to police and local reports. Authorities identified the victim as Omarian. A 32 year old man named Darryl has been charged with murder and, according to reports, is being held in the Fulton County Jail.
According to Atlanta police, Omarian took a Lyft home and was dropped off near the wrong breezeway at about 12:30 a.m. on Friday. He and his girlfriend had recently moved into the apartment complex, and police say he was unfamiliar with the area. He walked up to what he believed was his own apartment, but it was a neighbor’s door.
Omarian was on FaceTime with his girlfriend when he knocked. Police say he walked away soon after, and that is when the neighbor grabbed a gun and stepped onto his balcony to confront him. After a brief exchange, police say the neighbor fired.
His girlfriend told Channel 2 Action News that she heard him say he was sorry and that he was at the wrong house. A witness told the station that he heard Omarian apologize and say it was the wrong door before more shots were fired.
According to police, the suspect first told officers he shot in self defense. Investigators say they believe Omarian was shot from the balcony as he was coming down the stairs and trying to get away. Police say the investigation is ongoing, and the charge is an allegation that has yet to be tested in court.
Baller Alert sends condolences to Omarian’s family and friends.
