A Southern California woman was killed during a custody exchange outside a police station, authorities say.
According to the Hawthorne Police Department, 28 year old Brenda was fatally shot Sunday outside the Hawthorne Police Department. Police say the shooting happened around 6 p.m. at the entrance to the station lobby. Brenda had come to pick up her young son, who was already inside the station. Police say the boy was not hurt.
Lt. Gary Tomatani of the Hawthorne Police Department said a man, identified by police as the child’s 31 year old father, Jacob, fired at least one shot with a shotgun as Brenda approached. KTLA reports an officer heard the gunfire and fired back, but the suspect got away in his car.
Police say the car was found abandoned about half a mile south of the station. Authorities say Jacob was arrested about three hours later in the 4400 block of 134th Street, and the shotgun was recovered.
Police say the investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts are with Brenda’s family and loved ones.
