Lil Yachty says he is the main writer behind the City Girls hit “Act Up.”
During an interview with Kerwin Frost, Yachty revealed that he wrote the majority of the “Act Up” with the exception of J.T.’s final verse. “When it came out, people was so shocked, and they didn’t believe it,” Yachty said about the song. “I wrote the whole song except for J.T.’s last verse, but everything that everyone is singing and all, I wrote the whole thing.”
Yachty is one of the three writers named on the track, which was produced by EarlThePearll. EarlThePearll and Jatavia “J.T.” Johnson are the other two writers. “I just thought like them,” Yachty later explained. “I know them personally, and I know what women like to hear. I was like, ‘What’s some raunchy shit?’ So before I went in the booth, I said, ‘No homo y’all.’ Because all my boys was in the room. And I started saying just crazy shit. But I came out, and I was like, ‘Y’all watch, this is about to blow up.’”
Yachty went on to say that writing for artists was something he always wanted to do. “I knew I could do it though. I always wanted to do it. I always wanted to write a song for somebody. And I did it, and when it blew up, I felt so good. Because people always try to discredit me, man, ya know? So when I seen that I said, ‘man, I’m getting my credit.’ I realized now I get my credit a different way. I said, ‘If y’all don’t want to give me my credit I’ll get my credit a different way.’”
The 21-year-old star said that he enjoys writing music and has upcoming songs that he’s written that have yet to be released. “That was super fun. That was something different for me, and that’s something I’m getting into now. Like I’m about to start getting into writer camps with different producers,” said Yachty.
