R. Kelly recently lost a sexual abuse lawsuit brought against him by one of his alleged victims, Heather Williams, and now, his lawyers are claiming that it’s due to the confusion of all the legal cases he’s dealing with currently.
According to TMZ, Kelly’s legal team claims that the singer is overwhelmed, and had no idea what he was reading when he was served with papers related to the case while he was in jail. So, his lawyers intend to fight the judgment.
In the lawsuit, which comes after the ten count indictment for aggravated criminal sexual assault brought against him earlier this year, the victim, Heather Williams claimed that she was sexually abused by Kelly when she was 16 years old.
Williams’ attorney initially made several attempts to serve the singer and sent a legal letter to Kelly in an effort to settle her case out of court, but since Kelly never bothered to respond, her lawyers forged ahead with the lawsuit.
Kelly’s civil attorney, Brian Nix, told TMZ that “[Being overwhelmed] coupled with Mr. Kelly not being cognizant of what the motion fully meant led him to missing the hearing. I had no idea he had been served.”
A hearing is scheduled next month to determine the damages in this case.
