Jay-Z gave an emotional performance on Friday, paying tribute to Nipsey Hussle during his sold-out show at Webster Hall.
According to People Magazine, the hip-hop mogul honored his late friend through an unreleased freestyle, acknowledging Hussle’s lifetime of activism in South Los Angeles with the impromptu performance.
“Gentrify your own hood before these people do it/ Claim eminent domain and have your people move in/ That’s a small glimpse into what Nipsey was doing/ For anybody still confused as to what he was doing,” Jay-Z rapped.
“The neighborhood designed to keep up trapped / They redline us so property declines if you by blacks / They depress the asset and take the property back / It’s a ruthless but ingenious plan in fact,” he continued.
Jay-Z mentioned Hussle once more in his performance, “I told neighborhood Nipsey stay close/ There’s a hundred million dollars on your schedule, lay low … I never dreamed he’d be killed in a place that he called home.”
This isn’t Hov’s first tribute to Nipsey Hussle. His words were shared in the official program of “A Celebration of Life,” the homegoing service held at the Staples Center for the fallen-rapper. Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce were both in attendance.
