Barack Obama

In the wake of the untimely death of legendary film director John Singleton, Forever President Barack Obama reflected on Singleton’s career and classic works, as he highlighted the director’s groundbreaking efforts in Hollywood.

Obama took to Twitter on Tuesday to express his condolences and praise Singleton for his representation of his hometown in South Los Angeles with real stories about the struggles of the inner-city.

“Condolences to the family of John Singleton,” Obama said. “His seminal work, ‘Boyz N The Hood, remains one of the most searing, loving portrayals of the challenges facing inner-city youth.”

As Obama continued, he also commended Singleton for opening doors for other creatives of color, who too, have stories to tell.

“He opened doors for filmmakers of color to tell powerful stories that have been too often ignored,” Obama wrote.

Condolences to the family of John Singleton. His seminal work, Boyz n the Hood, remains one of the most searing, loving portrayals of the challenges facing inner-city youth. He opened doors for filmmakers of color to tell powerful stories that have been too often ignored.

Not only did Singleton’s work open doors for filmmakers, but it also launched the film careers of several Hollywood greats, such as Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut and many more.

Our condolences to the Singleton Family.
