Denver Becomes The First To Decriminalize Psychedelic Mushrooms

Denver will be the first U.S. city to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms.

After tallying up votes, the Denver Elections Division concluded that Initiative 301 was set to pass by a narrow margin of 50.6 % of the votes. The total stands at 89,320 votes in favor and 87, 341 opposed.

Even with the very close decision, Denver’s vote has been the focus of national attention as other states look to see what the voting climate is to get their psilocybin- related measures on the ballot in their own states.

Oregon and California will have similar votes coming up in 2020.

Critics of Colorado’s trailblazing legalization of marijuana are already concerned with the prospect of Denver leading the charge and adding mushrooms (which some still consider misguided and potentially harmful) into the equation.

The approved measure essentially tells the police to ease off adults use of psilocybin.

Psychedelic mushrooms would remain illegal to buy, sell or possess, with the latter time a felony that carries a potential punishment of up to a year in prison and a fine. But with Initiative 301 backers hope to lower the risk users face of getting caught with mushrooms.

Final election results are expected to be released May 16th.
