A former NFL player turning to fraud isn’t the type of legacy you want to leave. Unfortunately, this is what former Eagles WR, Irving Fryar, will now have to live with, seeing as though he’s just been found guilty for his role in a mortgage scam in New Jersey.
In the trial that lasted 3 weeks, the 52 year old former Baller turned pastor was accused of applying for multiple mortgage loans in quick succession, using the same property as collateral. Fryar’s mother, Allene McGhee, was also convicted in the scheme. Fryar says that he was the victim of a con-man, William Barksdale, who used him to carry out the scam. Unfortunately for Fryar, Barksdale had been working as the government’s key witness in the case after pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge last year.
Neither Fryar or his mother testified in the trial and both rejected plea deals that would have given Fryar 5 years, and his mother 3 years, behind bars. They maintained that they were victims, not criminals. Unfortunately the courts did not see it the same way. They were both found guilty on conspiracy and theft by deception charges after authorities say Fryar and his mother provided false wage information on her loan applications and claimed she earned thousands of dollars per month as an event coordinator for Fryar’s church. She only made a few payments on four of the loans and banks eventually wrote the loans off as losses.
Sentencing is scheduled for October 2.
