The rape trial of former NFL player Kellen Winslow Jr. is underway in San Diego, and the first of the women accusing him took the stand this week.
According to court coverage from the Associated Press, the woman, who is identified in court only as Jane Doe, testified on Tuesday that in March 2018 Winslow picked her up while she was hitchhiking, drove her to a shopping center parking lot, and raped her. She told jurors she did not fight back or try to run because he threatened to kill her. “He threatened to kill me, and I really believed that he would have,” she testified.
She is the first of five women expected to testify against Winslow. Prosecutors say the other accusers include a homeless woman who says she was assaulted last year, and a woman who says she was assaulted in 2003 when she was 17 years old.
Winslow’s defense attorney told the court the encounter was consensual. The defense also questioned the accuser’s credibility, pointing to earlier statements about her sobriety and to past arrests for public intoxication. The woman answered that she had been taking cough medicine and has been sober for decades.
A DNA expert also testified that DNA linked to Winslow was found on a pair of pants the woman gave to police. She said she waited four days to call police because she was frightened. “I was terrified,” she told the court.
Winslow has pleaded not guilty to 12 counts. The trial is ongoing, and Baller Alert will keep you posted as it develops.
