A Louisiana Catholic school principal resigned after being arrested at a Washington, D.C. club while on a school trip, according to local news reports.
WRIC 8 News reported that Michael, principal of Holy Family Catholic School in Port Allen, was arrested on May 30 while on a school sponsored trip to the nation’s capital. According to police reports cited by the station, officers were sent to Archibald’s Gentlemen’s Club on a complaint about an intoxicated man refusing to pay his bill.
The Diocese of Baton Rouge confirmed the arrest in a statement released Friday evening. The diocese said the incident happened while the students were in their hotel rooms for the evening under the supervision of other chaperones. It also said Michael had served as principal for five years, that he has submitted his resignation, and that an interim principal will be appointed.
Reports say he resigned by text on Friday. He faces charges of public intoxication and possession of an open container of alcohol. Those are charges, not convictions, and his own response was not included in the initial reports.
