Esteemed actress Sandra Bullock is executive producing a dramedy series for Amazon, set in the world of music and dance. According to Deadline, she has tapped fellow Oscar winners Akiva Goldsman and John Legend to help executive produce the project.

The series is loosely inspired by Bullock’s college years at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Deadline describes the show as “a hilarious, boundary-crossing, and often soul-wrenching trek through the oppressive cultural norms of the deep south in the 1980s, where one darkly off-beat young woman defies expectations and sets out in search of love, community, and most importantly, an identity of her own.”

“It’s a fantastical, dance-filled journey, traversing the worlds of drag-culture, mental health, and the AIDS epidemic, all while following a group of young outcasts who band together and dare to be themselves, despite the very real danger they face in doing so. It’s a vivid, fun, gut-punch of a story about letting go of shame and living out loud… and some of it’s even true,” according to the publication.

The idea culminated from conversations between Bullock and Goldsman (‘Star Trek: Discovery’), who then brought in Marja-Lewis Ryan (‘The L Word: Generation Q’) to help develop the concept. He will also be a consulting producer on the project. K.C. Perry (‘The Originals’) is writing the script. Legend and his Get Lifted Film Co. will help develop the show and curate the music, which will span ’80s pop, gospel, and opera.

The untitled project will join a lineup of new Amazon originals to be released within the year.
