A Miami condo owner has gone viral after screenshots surfaced of her calling a Black woman a “monkey” and a “prostitute.”
Monifah Brown is a 24-year-old event planner from London who was planning to rent out Giulia Ozyesilpinar’s “Ocean Five Condo Hotel” in South Beach, Miami, along with her three friends. The two began having a discussion via chat, but things quickly turned dark when Ozyesilpinar claimed Brown was using a stolen credit card.
The conversation started on WhatsApp in which Ozyesilpinar requested a down payment. Brown then asked for Ozyesilpinar to break down what she would be paying for before letting her know that she would need until June 28 to give her the deposit. Ozyesilpinar told Brown the dates couldn’t be held, but then Brown said she could pay the full amount on June 28 as an option. Ozyesilpinar reportedly was confused by Brown’s suggestion and assumed Brown was trying to use multiple cards to pay for the trip.
As Brown went on to explain that she would pay the full price, but Ozyesilpinar responded saying, “One of you has a credit card, I am sure.” Afterwards, Ozyesilpinar asked Brown to provide her age, a copy of her driver’s license and email. Brown quickly sent the information over. Things went smoothly until June 21, when Ozyesilpinar texted Brown about her credit card. When Brown didn’t respond back quickly, Ozyesilpinar verbally attacked her. “Are you there, or are you acting like you are ignoring me?” Ozyesilpinar wrote in the messages. “You acting with lies gives a very very bad picture for all of the black people. Please try to act like a lady and be a very good representation of black.” Later that day, Brown replied, explaining she was busy and could not address her texts at that time and responded to her racist comments.
“After your recent racist messages that you text to my phone, I now no longer feel comfortable staying in your property,” she replied. “Thank you so much for showing your true colors. I suggest next time you learn to have some class like this ‘black woman’ racist b***h.” Brown provided texts following her response that showed Ozyesilpinar calling her the n-word and “monkey.” Ozyesilpinar also asked if Brown was a prostitute and sent her “direct voice notes” of sounds she said African monkeys make.
Brown posted the conversation to Twitter, and Booking.com eventually responded to the incident by removing the condo from its website after it went viral. Ozyesilpinar posted Brown’s license on Facebook and admitted to calling the young woman a monkey and said: “being racist is not illegal.”
