Black excellence is at an all-time high, with Netflix productions “When They See Us” and “Homecoming” racking up nominations for the 2019 Emmys.
The nominees were announced on Tuesday, and both are up for a long list of awards in several categories.
With an emotional account of the Central Park Five case, “When They See Us,” earned a total of 16 nominations this year, including Outstanding limited series.
As for the cast, Jharrel Jerome’s talented portrayal of Korey Wise earned him the first Emmy nod of his career for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie. While Niecy Nash and Aunjanue Ellis, who both played mothers were nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie.
Ava DuVernay shared her excitement on Twitter, after learning of her directing and co-writing nominations with Michael Starrbury for the four-part series.
“Thank you to the real men for inviting me to tell their story,” DuVernay tweeted after the nominations were announced. “Thank you, @TelevisionAcad, for honoring the work. Saluting every single crew and cast member. And saluting Raymond, Korey, Antron, Yusef, and Kevin. Love you, brothers.”
After receiving an impressive six nods for her live concert film “Homecoming,” which documented her unforgettable 2018 Coachella performance and paid homage to HBCU’s, Beyoncé is close behind.
“Homecoming” is up for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Outstanding Music Direction, Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Production Design, and Outstanding Costumes For Variety. As co-director, writer, co-musical director as well as a producer of the film, Queen Bey could walk away with four awards of her own.
While Beyoncé has previously been nominated for four Emmys, including Outstanding Variety Special for her visual album “Lemonade,” she has yet to win. “Homecoming” which reached 1.1 million views on its premiere date, may change that fate.
As for the remaining nominees, ‘Game of Thrones’ landed a whopping 32 nominations, setting a new record for the most Primetime Emmy nods for a show in a single year. Amazon’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ scored 20, HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ secured 19, ‘Saturday Night Live’ earned 18 and HBO’s ‘Barry,’ along with FX’s ‘Fosse/Verdon’ earned 17 each.
The 2019 Emmy Awards will be on Sunday, September 22 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
