Earlier this month, R. Kelly was arrested for multiple federal sex crimes, and now he’s asking a judge to release him before his pending trial because the claims made by his alleged victims are false.
Per TMZ, court documents petitioning for the singer’s release reveal that Kelly referred to the women as “disgruntled groupies” that desperately wanted his attention.
In fact, his legal team explained that despite the allegations made against him, he maintains his “innocence” because the women “fought each other” over Kelly “voluntarily contacted him” and still showed support by attending his shows.
One lawyer representing the singer, Douglas Anton, went on to question the strength of the government’s case altogether. In the court documents, he claims that the women are dead set on assassinating Kelly’s character. He believes that the women are exhibiting “groupie remorse” for years of obsessive behavior and using the singer’s name for fame.
According to TMZ, Anton says it amounts to “five disgruntled groupies, not all of which are alleged to be underage, who now show groupie remorse so many years later and only after a TV Show and an aggressive, vocal Cook County prosecutor makes a public cry for ‘victims come forth,’ tell your story and be famous.”
As for one victim in particular, who claims that she contracted herpes from the singer, Kelly’s legal team says that the woman “wanted him so much” that she never asked him to wear a condom. Kelly’s lawyers say that despite the fact she started a sexual relationship with the singer as an adult, she was “admittedly promiscuous,” and federal prosecutors never looked into her sexual history.
The judge has yet to make a decision in the singer’s request for an early release.
