A Montana man has been charged with assaulting a 13 year old boy who did not take off his hat during the national anthem. Now, according to reports from outlets including Fox, the man’s attorney says his client believed he was acting on orders from President Donald Trump.
Attorney Lance Jasper told reporters that his client, Curt, is seeking a mental health evaluation. Jasper said Curt had become so worked up over the political climate that he struck the boy for keeping his hat on. According to the attorney, Curt believed he was following the president’s orders.
“His commander in chief is telling people that if they kneel, they should be fired, or if they burn a flag, they should be punished,” Jasper said. He added that his client “certainly didn’t understand it was a crime.” Jasper also said he plans to point to a vehicle crash from the year 2000 as part of a mental illness defense.
Prosecutors formally charged Curt with assault on a minor, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $50,000 fine. These are allegations, and he has not been convicted of anything. The statements about why he acted come from his attorney, not from any finding by a court.
