Taylor Swift Talks Supporting The LGBTQ Community:  “I Can’t Imagine What My Fans In The LGBTQ Community Might Be Thinking”

Taylor Swift is opening about why she’s speaking out in support of the #LGBTQ community.

In the past few months, Swift has been publicly showing her support for the LGBTQ. She recently endorsed pro-LGBTQ politicians, created a petition to change the Equality Act and released a video called “You Need To Calm Down” that highlights the LGBTQ community.

Some speculated that Swift was a conservative, particularly after her silence during the 2016 presidential election. Some fans feel her seemingly newfound feelings towards the community are new. But it was during her interview with Vogue where the songstress spoke about her uncomfortable moment with her friend #ToderickHall that made her want to get more involved.

“Maybe a year or two ago, Todrick and I are in the car,” Taylor said. “And he asked me, ‘What would you do if your son was gay?’” According to Taylor, the question “shocked” her: “The fact that he had to ask me…shocked me and made me realize that I had not made my position clear enough or loud enough. If my son was gay, he’d be gay. I don’t understand the question.”

Swift said to Vogue that if her friend wondered if she was anti-gay, then her fans might have to.  “If he was thinking that, I can’t imagine what my fans in the LGBTQ community might be thinking.” “It was kind of devastating to realize that I hadn’t been publicly clear about that,” she added.

Swift’s change has greatly impacted voter registration, and her Change.org petition has more than a half a million signatures.
