While rumors and conspiracy theories begin to swirl after the early morning announcement of Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s apparent suicide, the Daily Mail is reporting that Epstein had been telling guards and inmates at the Metropolitan Correctional Center that someone had tried to kill him.
According to the Daily Mail, an insider, who had seen the billionaire on several occasions during his incarceration said that Epstein was “in good spirits” and that “there was no indication that he might try to take his own life.”
The former financier, 66, was awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy and sex trafficking dating back to 2002 and was being held at the high-security Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, after pleading not guilty to the charges.
In a statement to the Daily Mail, officials at the MCC said that the FBI is now launching an investigation into Epstein’s death.
Epstein’s “suicide” comes just two weeks after he was hospitalized, following what may have been his first suicide attempt.
An inside source also told the Daily Beast that the Billionaire was being extorted by other inmates.
Many question the timing of his death as it came just 24 hours after more than 2,000 pages of documents detailing the lurid allegations of his sexual abuse of underage girls were unsealed to the public.
Epstein had a long list of very powerful political and celebrity associates including Former President Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew, and Donald Trump.
Many critics question why Epstein was taken off suicide watch. Attorney General William Barr has vowed to look into the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death.
“Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered,” AG Barr said in a statement this afternoon.
