North Carolina candy stop completely sold out after offering a deal to patrons: burn a Confederate flag, a historical symbol for racism and hate, get free chocolates.
Matthew Shepherd, the owner of Matthew’s Chocolates in Hillsborough, N.C. apparently got tired of a large pro-Confederate group rally near his chocolate shop and offered an incentive to get them away from his business, according to a story on MyFox8.
“They were calling me names, they’re calling everybody names,” Shepherd told WNCN. “They’re instigating, they’re poking, they’re blocking the sidewalk.”
He attempted to quiet the noise with the help of law enforcement; however, they informed him there was nothing they could do, so Shepherd took matters into his own hands.
As a joke, he posted on a sign, “Burn a rebel flag…get free chocolate!” on July 27th, however, the response could not have been more real.
By the end of the week, Matthew’s Chocolates was out of chocolates!
“I didn’t do this to make money,” he said. “This was not even in my realm of thinking. I was in Home Depot the other day, and I got two fist bumps and a high five from people I don’t even know. They’re like a way to go, fight the fight, we’re all behind you. I’m like. ‘I just put a sign-out. It was there for an hour.’”
Shepherd posted on his business facebook page with the following:
“Whew, What a week! I have to apologize to everyone though, we will not be opening on Sunday. We have sold out of everything! There is nothing to sell. No gelato, no chocolates. I am truly sorry for this, I just couldn’t make enough chocolates to keep up ?Thank you ALL for your support, it is overwhelming, and I am touched by the love and support pouring in from all over the state. Thank you again!”
