Questlove will co-executive produce an upcoming Broadway musical based on ‘Soul Train,’ alongside show host and creator Don Cornelius’ son, Tony Cornelius.
The play, tentatively scheduled to be completed by 2021, will honor the iconic music variety program and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the TV series that aired from 1971 to 2006. According to Deadline, the adaptation will trace the personal story of Don Cornelius.
In a statement to the publication, Tony Cornelius said the musical will honor the “accomplishments, creative vision and legacy” of his father, who died in 2012 at age 75. “A Broadway musical only emphasizes the impact Soul Train has had on our American fabric,” Tony said.
“With many years of experience working directly with my father, I’m forever grateful and deeply humbled by the impact Soul Train has had on the culture at large both here and abroad,” he continued. “For 37 years, and with purpose, through music, dance and style, Soul Train brought Love, Peace & Soul to a national audience.”
CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker is also slated to executive produce in his Broadway debut along with Live Nation Urban president Shawn Gee.
Questlove shared the exciting announcement via Instagram with the caption reading, “Tryna make dreams come true every day of my life. Y’all know I bleed #soultrain so this move should surprise none of y’all. Extremely proud to be part of this awesome team and a part of hisherstory.”
Congratulations to Questlove and the whole cast and crew of the upcoming ‘Soul Train’ on Broadway musical!
