A young man identified as Matthew, 18, was taken into custody after a triple homicide in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, that left two women and a one year old child dead.
MLB insider Jeff Passan reported that the wife and one year old son of Blake Bivens, a pitcher in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, were among the three people killed. Her mother was also reported to be one of the victims.
Local reports say a neighbor found one person dead in the driveway on Tuesday, August 27, and further investigation turned up another adult and the child dead inside the home. WSET reported that officers responded to the home at around 8 a.m. after a 911 call.
WSET also reported that Matthew ran past reporters near a media staging area and allegedly grabbed a church groundskeeper by the neck. Video released by authorities shows an officer chasing him down the street. Around noon, he reportedly came out of a wooded area and was detained, according to police.
Police told WSET that Matthew is being treated at a local medical facility and faces three counts of first degree murder. The charges are allegations. The Tampa Bay Rays posted on Twitter, sending thoughts and prayers to the Bivens family.
