Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has removed actor Malik Yoba from his role as national spokesperson for its Sigma Beta Club youth program, according to a memo to members that was obtained and reported by NewsOne on September 9, 2019.
The Sigma Beta Club program mentors pre teen and teenage boys through social, cultural and educational enrichment. Yoba, an honorary member of the fraternity, was named its spokesperson earlier this year.
The decision followed a Facebook post made on September 1 by Mariah, a trans activist. In the post, she alleged that Yoba had a sexual encounter with her about 20 years ago, when she was a minor, and later paid her for sex. These are allegations made by Mariah, and they have not been proven.
According to the memo, the fraternity said the allegations are a serious issue that could distract from the mission of the program. The memo also noted that Yoba denies the allegation.
On September 4, Yoba posted a freestyle video on Instagram, which has since been deleted. In it, he said he was not going to defend himself. Yoba has not been charged with any crime in connection with the allegation.
We will keep you posted if either side says more.
