A former substitute teacher in New Jersey has been charged in a case involving a 14 year old student, according to a criminal complaint reported by NJ.com, People and the NY Post. The charges are allegations, and no one has been convicted.
Elyse, 45, was arrested on August 29 and charged with aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and a related count tied to the alleged conduct, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. She last worked for the Jersey City Board of Education in November 2018.
The complaint alleges the relationship began when the student was in sixth grade and continued into last year. Investigators say the case came to light after Elyse’s own children, ages 13 and 14, confronted her during a heated argument. The children’s father then contacted child protection services, reportedly because he believed she had harmed the children during the argument, and that report led police to the allegations in the complaint.
At a detention hearing, prosecutors told the court that Elyse had confessed and that she faces 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted. Reports said she had not entered a plea. Prosecutors asked that she be held, but a judge released her and barred her from contact with any minors other than her own children.
It was unclear whether she had an attorney who could comment, and reporters were unable to reach her for a response.
