Today is the first official   #NationalPeriodDay, a new movement in which women and men in all 50 states will rally to push for an end to period poverty. The mission is to demand that menstrual products/resources become accessible for all and for the #TamponTax to come to an end.
According to Period.org, 35 U.S. States still have a sales tax on period products considering them non-essential items. One in four women struggle to afford period products due to a lack of income. In the first city-wide study on period poverty, it was found that 46 percent of low-income women had to choose between a meal and period products.
The movement is one that will change the stigma surrounding menstrual cycles. While it may appear to be an affordable, non-issue for some, there are millions of homeless and low-income women around the world who are not educated or equipped to care for their menstruation.
The reality is women get periods, they are a part of life – literally. Without them, none of us would be here. The love-hate relationship is one that all women can relate to. So as we celebrate the first National Period Day, here are some relatable tweets!
