A shocking, yet not so shocking video has surfaced of a politician in Tennessee making a homophobic comment while talking about presidential candidates, all while claiming white men in this country have very few rights.
“We’ve Got A Queer Running For President,” Sevier County Commissioner Warren Hurst says, in reference to 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. While he did not mention Buttigieg by name, he is the openly gay candidate currently running for president.
Hurst was reportedly initially speaking on gun owners’ rights during a public meeting on Monday and went off on an offensive rant. Hurst was reportedly against the county commission’s pending vote on becoming a gun sanctuary city and was calling for people to, “wake up.” He also commented about his concerns about a “liberal agenda” and its impact on the US.
In footage capture by WVLT, you can hear him say, “I’m not prejudice, but by golly as a white male in this country has very few rights and they’re getting took more every day.”
The comments were graciously welcomed by the crowd as most of the people can be heard laughing or cheering, with the exception of one lady who wanted no parts in the racist and homophobic banter. She stood up, walked out, and could be heard saying, “Excuse me. This is not professional. This is bullsh*t.”
When contacted by WVLT about his controversial comments, the commissioner stood by them, saying that some of his best friends are African-American.
A statement released Tuesday on the Sevier County’s Twitter page, claims that the comments made by Commissioner Hurst do not reflect the opinion or position of Sevier County administration.
