A former Boston College student has been indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge in the suicide of her boyfriend, according to Suffolk County prosecutors. This story discusses suicide.
District Attorney Rachael Rollins announced the charge at a news conference on Monday, Oct. 28, according to WBUR. A grand jury indicted Inyoung, 21, on Oct. 18. Her boyfriend, Alexander, 22, died by suicide in May, shortly before he was due to graduate. His family had traveled from New Jersey for the ceremony.
Prosecutors allege that Inyoung was physically, verbally and psychologically abusive during their 18 month relationship, that she knew he was struggling with suicidal thoughts, and that she encouraged him to take his own life. Rollins said investigators found evidence on his phone, including text messages. Prosecutors say the two exchanged more than 75,000 messages in the two months before his death, with about 47,000 sent by Inyoung, and that some of them allegedly urged him to harm himself. Prosecutors also allege she tracked his location and was present nearby the morning he died.
WBUR reported that Inyoung has returned to South Korea, where she is from. Rollins said prosecutors are in contact with a person who says they represent her and that they are cautiously optimistic she will return voluntarily. If she does not, Rollins said, her office plans to use the power it has to bring her back to Boston.
No statement from Inyoung or an attorney for her was included in reporting at the time, and an indictment is an accusation, not a finding of guilt.
